The Telemark Canal is one of Norway’s most beautiful and historic waterways. Here you can experience impressive lock systems, idyllic lakes, beautiful mountain landscapes, and living Norwegian cultural history. Whether you want a day trip by canal boat, an active cycling holiday, or a canal package with accommodation at the historic Straand Hotel in Vrådal, many wonderful experiences await along the Telemark Canal.
There are many beautiful places in Norway, but not all can boast of being called the eighth wonder of the world. The Telemark Canal can!
When the Telemark Canal was completed in 1892, it was the result of an impressive feat. Around 500 workers had spent five years blasting, digging, and building their way through mountains and landscapes to create a continuous waterway between Skien and Dalen.
The result was a 105-kilometer long canal with 18 lock chambers and a total elevation difference of 72 meters. An engineering marvel that still impresses, more than 130 years later.
At that time, the Telemark Canal was one of the most important thoroughfares between upper and lower Telemark. People, livestock, goods, and timber were transported through the landscape, and the canal played a crucial role in both trade and development in the region.
Today, it is primarily the great experiences that attract visitors to the Telemark Canal. But history lives on. The old stone walls, the enormous lock gates, and the traditional mechanisms are still part of the experience.
This is precisely what makes a trip on the Telemark Canal so special. Here you don’t just see beautiful nature. You also get to experience a piece of living Norwegian history.
A boat trip on the Telemark Canal is an experience suitable for couples, families, and groups of friends. It’s not about getting there as fast as possible, but about enjoying the journey and all the small moments along the way.
From the deck of one of the historic canal boats, you can watch the landscape change as the boat glides through lakes, narrow river channels, and beautiful natural areas. Along the way, you’ll pass old quays, small villages, and impressive lock systems that are still operated according to traditional principles.
One of the most fascinating aspects of a trip on the Telemark Canal is precisely the locks. Here you can see how the water level is regulated and how the large canal boats are slowly lifted or lowered between different water levels.
It’s an experience that sparks curiosity in both young and old.
And as the boat moves through the landscape, you can lean back, enjoy the view, and perhaps have a cup of coffee. There’s something special about experiencing Telemark at a slightly slower pace.
Do you want to experience the Telemark Canal but wish to combine the boat trip with other activities on the same day? Then a half-day trip between Lunde and Ulefoss might be a good option.
This trip gives you the opportunity to experience some of the Telemark Canal’s most famous lock systems without spending the entire day on the water.
The trip starts at Ulefoss locks, where you take the canal bus to Lunde. From there, the journey continues by canal boat through the beautiful canal landscape and back to Ulefoss.
Along the way, you’ll pass Vrangfoss locks, among others, which is the Telemark Canal’s largest lock system. With its five lock chambers and a total lift height of about 23 meters, Vrangfoss is an impressive sight.
Here you can watch as the boat slowly moves through the locks, and the large gates open and close. It’s easy to be fascinated by how this historic facility still functions so many years after it was built.
The half-day trip is well-suited for those who want a taste of the Telemark Canal, and it’s also a great experience for families with children.
If you want to experience even more of the Telemark Canal, we highly recommend a day trip from Kviteseid or Spjotsodd to Ulefoss.
This is a rich boat trip through some of the most beautiful canal landscapes in Telemark. Along the way, you’ll experience large lakes surrounded by steep mountainsides, narrow river stretches, idyllic villages, and a total of six lock systems.
Depending on which day you travel, you can experience the trip aboard the M/S Victoria or M/S Henrik Ibsen. The historic canal boats are an important part of the Telemark Canal’s identity and give the journey a very special atmosphere.
On this stretch, you truly get to experience the variety that makes the Telemark Canal so unique. From open waters with wide views to narrow passages where the forest and mountainsides are close by.
When the boat arrives in Ulefoss, the return journey is by bus to Kviteseid or Spjotsodd.
For guests staying at Straand Hotel in Vrådal, this is a great opportunity to combine their hotel stay with one of Telemark’s most famous attractions.

The Telemark Canal can be experienced in more ways than from the water. For those who enjoy an active holiday, the area also offers great opportunities for cycling through beautiful and varied nature.
The Canal Route is a cycling route of about 100 kilometers that combines nature experiences, historical sites, pleasant accommodations, and a concluding boat trip on the Telemark Canal.
Here you truly get to experience Telemark from several sides. You cycle through small villages, along lakes, and through a landscape that alternates between forest, mountains, and open cultural landscapes.
The route mainly follows roads with little traffic, but also offers hilly terrain and some steep climbs. It is therefore an advantage to have some experience with longer bike rides.
The first cycling stage goes from Lunde to Vrådal, where the historic Straand Hotel awaits by beautiful Nisser.
The trip is mainly on asphalt through a varied landscape, with both calm stretches and hills that get your pulse up a bit.
After about 55 kilometers on a bike, it’s especially nice to arrive at the hotel, put down your bike, and enjoy a well-deserved break.
At Straand Hotel, you can relax in pleasant surroundings, enjoy a good dinner, and gather strength for the next day’s adventures.
Perhaps you’ll also be tempted by a short stroll down to Nisser, or a quiet moment with a view over the water?
After a good breakfast at Straand Hotel, the bike tour continues from Vrådal to Dalen.
This stage is about 45 kilometers long and goes through a beautiful landscape with both asphalt roads and gravel sections.
Along the way, you’ll experience more of the magnificent nature that characterizes West Telemark, with forested hills, small villages, and beautiful viewpoints.
Upon arrival in Dalen, another overnight stay awaits, this time at the historic Dalen Hotel.
After two days of cycling, it’s time to let the canal boat take care of the transport.
From Lastein quay in Dalen, the journey goes back towards Lunde through the beautiful landscape of the Telemark Canal.
Here you can enjoy breakfast on board, lean back, and see parts of the landscape you’ve cycled through from a completely different angle.
The combination of cycling, great dining experiences, historic hotels, and a boat trip on the Telemark Canal makes this a holiday with many fond memories.
